G'day again,
Here is something to add a bit more fuel to this 'will the GUS be
supported in protected mode without 32bit AIL" discussion.... <g>
I got the Star Trek : Judgment rites game from interplay the other
day and included in the game (30 Meg Game mind you...;) was this
demo called STAR REACH....a new release for them.
Now, this Demo uses this DOS4GW (dont hassle me...I cant remember
if the G goes before the W or the D goes... :) and supports the
gus natively...(ANY IRQ me thinks...) . Sounds great and its got this
wicked bit in it where it says....."Unreal sound support" and then
it flashes to the next screen shot of the control menu for sound card
selection and well, the ULTRASOUND is highlighed on the menu (above
the SB16 and the others... *BIG GRIN* I wonder why??? )
I'll upload it before the weekend is up. I'm sure Interplay wont mind
distrubuting there demo... ;)
Cheers and many a good beers (not Ice...dont like the taste..),
Nasir.

Subject: Dune on CDROM
Hello....
Two questions-
1) Has anybody got SBOS or Megaem to run reliably with Dune (the first one)
on CDROM? SBOS gets FM and digital, but locks the computer- including
ctrl-alt-del reboots. Megaem gives a host of odd errors, but the result
is that I can't get the CDROM to work properly. (OK, Steve, I know the
use of 'properly' is redundant there)
2) Why doesn't the new ultramid load patches? Maybe I'm ignorant, but moving
ULTRAMID.INI all over the place didn't help either.
Later,
Jeff

Subject: Game company addresses
Hi! First, this is my first time posting to the digest, so if
something goes wrong, sorry. Anyway, I've been reading about
Origin's position on GUS support. What I'd like to do is
write to as many software companies as possible, and ask for
their position on the GUS. So, if you don't mind, could you
send me the names and (snail mail) addresses of any game
companies you know.
You can send e-mail to me at
eddie.maste@ablelink.org
BTW, I've had my GUS for about 2-3 weeks now and I love it!
However, I tried out Sierra's LSL6 and had some problems with the
sound effects. The samples would pause or loop while playing,
but stopped properly. The music worked perfectly. I really
don't mind too much because I finished the game in about 6-7
hours anyway and then deleted it, but I was just wondering if
anyone else had problems, or knows what's wrong so I could fix
it if I have problems with other games. LSL6 came with
Ultramid.exe, but I used my own (later release.) Could this
have been the problem?

charang.pat can be found on the 2.06[L/a] disks, I believe. Look in
./gravis/disks on the GUS archives.

Dune 2 can be patched with GUS drivers. Check on the archives in the
games directory for dune* files.
> Also any new games out there that have excellent GUS support?
Pinball Fantasies looks and plays great. Doom is excellent.

SBOS is probably the best you can do for the sound effects. Different
versions of SBOS do the sound effects differently, so you might want
to audition a variety of versions.

The NMI problem is related more to the motherboard than to any
particular brand of chipset. Some motherboards just do not have
the NMI implemented according to the AT bus specs. You might
want to try asking your dealer to exchange your motherboard for
one that does have a working NMI.

Download gail3214.zip from the submit directory on epas and install
it in Syndicate for GUS support (read the readme for further instructions).
If you experience lock-ups, then set both your Ultrasound IRQs to 5 or
less (technically, 7 or less, but I don't trust IRQ 7).
=============
gus0038.zip problems:
The new ultrinit (version 2.16) and ultrajoy put revision 2.4 (and
likely any other revision less than 3.4) GUSes in an unstable state
that causes a few GUS programs to crash (eg. Inertia Player and
Triton's GUS Commercial). Use the old ultrinit.exe from the 2.06
disks, rename it oldinit.exe, and place it after ultrinit.exe and
ultrajoy.exe in your autoexec.bat. For example:
rem New Ultrinit -- use it to float the adlib ports, if desired
d:\ultrasnd\ultrinit.exe -ej
rem Let Ultrajoy calibrate the game port, if desired
d:\ultrasnd\ultrajoy.exe 22
rem Use the old ultrinit.exe to place revision 2.x GUSes in a
rem stable state for certain software. It has to go after the
rem new ultrinit and ultrajoy.
d:\ultrasnd\oldinit.exe
If that's too confusing, just wait a couple of days for Gravis to
release the necessary bug fixes. They've already fixed the new
PlayMIDI, Ultramid, Midifier, and AIL 32's.
Phat.

Subject: Re: gus0038 and Windows
I too have been having trouble with Windows since installing gus0038.
So far, I have had the following things happen:
- Screen clears, and then nothing happens.
- Background and hourglass appears, then nothing.
- Loads alright, but mouse doesn't respond.
- Loads alright, but mouse curser doesn't appear.
With the last two cases, an Alt-F4 would get me back to Dos fine,
and the mouse would work again in other programs.
With the first two cases, a reset was required.
I have also had trouble with the new Modus and certain mod files.
That reminds me of the last time I had trouble with Windows. That time,
the old Modus crashed Windows permanently. I had to wipe out the entire
Windows directory, and completely reinstall it.
I really don't wnat to do that again...

How funny ! I went to see Gravis at the InterMedia show in San Jose
last year (1993) and got to listen to this exact demo.
it was quite impressive, to tell you the truth. And the 3-d was VERY

Where did you find one for that price? That's a smoking deal! Let us
know. I can tell some friends about it.

Well if you get a job @ a software store you get all kinds of deals from
manufacturers so you can tell your customers what a great product they have.
For example, you can get a GUS for $50 and add a mem upgrade for $32. I
couldn't resist. :)

To anyone who can't get SBOS to work because of the N.M.I error, try this;
Load SBOS with the -o3 switch first, THEN, you can load sbos normally
(ie. just SBOS) I'm using version 3.7b2, and it also works with the version
that came on my install disks (2.05). I told someone else who was having the
problem, and it worked for him too, SO i assume it will work for everyone.
At first I thought it still wasn't working properly, but I've since been
informed that it doesn't work peoperly for anyone :-)
Happy GUSing!

Subject: Mortal Kombat & GUS/SB
Hi there. Okay, I have Mortal Kombat for the PC and it's one great game.
I use my GUS with Megaem to get the Roland sound, and my Sound Blaster
(yes I got them to cooperate) for the SB sound. However, sometimes, when
playing, I get a car horn when hitting a person. Are there patches which
are better for playing this game? Is there a way so I can have better
support? Preciate it..

Does anyone know a GOOD multi media presentation/composition software
program? It does not matter whether it is retail or shareware. I am in need
of a program, which will allow me to compose slideshow/text/ demos along with
music/voice of a number of different subjects. I also need to be able to
"snip" screen shots of graphics and text with this same program or another
program and import these screen captures/snips into the multi media composer/
viewer.
Thanks for any and all suggestions!

Subject: Random faults in Windows
It might be important to those of you who have been experiencing
random windows problems might not be solely due to the gus
software. Columnist Brian Livingston for INFOWORLD magazine
reports that the line "MaxBPS = 768" should be put in the
386Enh section of WIN.INI. This takes care of a lot of problems
with windows dying prematurely, which is caused by using up
all of the breakpoints (BPS) and windows having random errors
after this is exceeded. Give it a try, it might work for you.

Subject: Recording on the GUS
Ho all!
I have been fiddling with the mic. and line in inputs for sampling and have
come across a few odd things.
A) The resultant sample sounds dead in the upper frequency range. Is there any
way to bypass the input filters, if there are any?
B) Sampling from the microphone is quite noisy, despite the pass through being
very very clear and line in being noiseless (as far as I can tell) when
sampling albeit flat.
Will the 16-bit daughterbaud fix these problems for me for a large sum of
money? Any hints and ideas will be appreciated.

I'm still on v2.08 of SBOS - no qi2699++MegaEm 'fraid!
Any thoughts?
